Driveway and Walkway Installation and Repair

The driveway to your home is one of the key elements that makes a home interesting and attractive. From dirt tracks with wagon ruts to elegant stone designs, Americans have always chosen their driveway materials to balance appearance and cost. Fortunately these days, there is an enormous range of materials to choose from which ensures that we can accommodate every driveway design preference and almost every budget.

These are some of the considerations when selecting the right material for your used in driveway construction:
  • Asphalt - cost effective, easy to repair, but with a shorter life than other materials. Asphalt is also a petroleum product so has some environmental impact.
  • Concrete - cost effective, low maintenance and hardy in hot and cold climates like ours. Concrete does have a higher environmental impact than some other materials.
  • Brick - huge range of options in terms of color, material and costs, and a very long lifespan. Also, we use locally sourced bricks to ensure low environmental impact.
  • Stamped concrete - very cost effective and an almost unlimited selection of appearances and styles. Stamped concrete is well suited to almost any climate and has the same environmental impact as concrete.
  • Gravel - cost effective but the lifespan of gravel driveways and walkways will depend on the preparation of the base. Not suitable for steep driveways since loose gravel will always move down and out onto the roadway.
  • Permeable pavers - a new technology that allows water and snow melt to flow through to the ground below. Less cost effective than traditional materials, but more environmentally friendly than concrete.

But it takes planning, skill and experience to build a wall appropriate for the location and gradient and that can handle the enormous pressure, gravity and weather to last for decades and look beautiful throughout. We have lengthy experience in building retaining walls of all types, and our trained teams know how to work efficiently and effectively to build retaining walls with the foundations, bases, edging and drainage to ensure they will stand strong and solid and looking great for years to come.

Sometimes retaining walls move through subsidence or because of heavy rainfall or uneven loading. We have the skills and experience to assess the cause, and design and implement a solution to restore the wall to optimum functionality, and ensure it does its job for many years. Safety is the keyword here and in adjusting a wall, whether it is a standard or retaining wall, we take great care to see that the surrounding structures and the members of your family or business are as safe as possible.

Foundation repair

Foundation problems have to be taken seriously since they can lead to significant damage to the structure of your building. Some foundation cracks are normal, some are not - many foundations will settle over time, but if this settlement is extreme or not even across the length and breadth of the building, problems can occur. About 50-60% of homes built on expansive soils will have changes to their foundations, but this is generally not an issue unless only part of the foundation settles or moves, since it may cause cracks and misalignment of walls and floors.

Some common signs of foundation stress are:
  • Twists in walls
  • Bricks cracked or broken
  • Cracks or breaks in the foundation walls or floor
  • Separation of walls or around windows or doors
  • Cracks in floors or uneven floors.

Doors that won't close, cracks in walls and floors that are uneven can be signs of foundation problems caused by differential movement. Such movement is generally caused by changes in soil moisture, so water is almost always the main culprit.

These problems are made worse if your house or building was built on clays, or on fill soils that were not compacted properly. Poor drainage around the foundation or extreme seasonal temperatures can also contribute to foundation damage in these circumstances.

Foundation damage can result in structural damage to your home or building, ugly cracks, loss of functionality of doors and windows and serious loss of real estate value. It can be very dangerous to you, your family or your business. If you see signs of foundation failure, do not delay but get help to solve the problem right away. The issue will not resolve itself and the longer you wait, the more difficult and costly the repair may be.

This is not a repair to be undertaken by amateurs or inexperienced contractors, since their efforts may turn out to be futile or may even make the situation worse. Some more experienced contractors may use methods of remediation that involve significant disruption to the family or business in the building, which can have serious emotional and economic consequences.

Rockland Masonry has years of experience in assessing and remediating foundation issues. We are aware of the significant safety and economic issues at stake. Our teams are trained in the latest technologies of slabjacking and piering or hydraulic jacking. They know the best practice to ensure successful solutions to foundation sinking that involve little or no disruption to your home or business. Our teams will work with you to assess the cause of the damage, select the appropriate course of action and remediation method, and work efficiently and promptly to get the work done on time and to budget. As always. the safety of you, your family or workforce is our number one priority.

Patio Installation and Repair

There's nothing better than relaxing on the patio with family and friends. The patio has been an architectural feature for for hundreds of years as a place to socialize and recuperate, and also as a outside showcase for the house. Patios come in all shapes and sizes, and are often a reflection not only of the home that they are attached to, but also of the personality and interests of the homeowner. And a fine patio never fails to add substantial value to a home, both in terms of utility and sale price.

At Rockland Masonry, we believe that the key to a successful patio installation is the communication and planning before a shovel touches the ground. Our experienced designers will work with you or your architects to ensure that you have all the information about available  patio designs and materials. This process will take into account where the patio is located, how the patio is to be used, and what your design and budget preferences are. Only when we are satisfied that you have a full understanding of all the design and material choices do we start our stone or brick work on site. We are very proud of our patio work throughout Rockland, Bergen and Westchester counties, and our clients feel the same. Our pool cement repair work is also extremely popular.
